As I commented to Handle, technology is more easily lost than most think. Read “I, Pencil”. Our civilization is the opposite of Ragnarök proof. Between ever greater plundering of the productive to pay for Head Start × ∞, “diversity programs”, feeding (and drugging) the burgeoning dysgenic masses, etc., eventually taking funds from infrastructure maintenance; neo-Aztec Gaia worshippers attacking resource extraction, and demanding technological progress be reversed to a more “sustainable standard of living” (and killing much of the world population in the process); dysgenic idiocracy leading to too few people with the needed smarts to maintain modern high technology; warfare, especially the likelihood of nuclear warfare, biological warfare, and information-eradicating cyber-warfare as the Cathedral, endlessly doubling down, switches more from the “convert the heathen” mode to “burn the heretic mode” (these being the only modes of treatment the Cathedral has for non-believers, and why they will never allow exit: exit would allow the unbeliever to persist in unbelief, and that will forever be unacceptable: convert or die is the only choice that they will ever offer), it’s hard to see any way to avoid the headlong Progressive charge over that event horizon.

So yes, permanent and irreversible.
