Autophagic Leftism

Oh come, come, this kind of entertainment deserves a real link:

For these [New Atheist] thinkers, Islam is obviously a bad and destructive system of thought. Yet billions of people spend their whole lives trying to live according to these stupid teachings, generation after generation. What’s worse, in the modern world, they have ready access to knowledge about the superior system of secular modernity, but they persist in embracing a crappy religion. At a certain point, you have to wonder if there is simply something wrong with such people, right? Perhaps their reasoning capacities are hampered in some way. Indeed, one begins to wonder, could it perhaps be something … inborn? […] Basically, declaring oneself to be on the avant-garde of “reason” is always going to lead to racism if you take it to its logical conclusion. Thankfully for the mental health of the “party of reason,” however, their self-regard and in-group loyalty keep them from following the dictates of reason on this matter, because it would make it seem like maybe their empty gesture at a contentless “reason” had accidentally made them into bad people.

We’ve come a long way baby.

One strange feature of the online atheist movement is that while all religions are bad, Islam is consistently presented as the very worst — so that Richard Dawkins, for instance, can wonder aloud whether atheists should support Christian missionaries in Africa to combat the spread of Islam.

I wonder how many old New Atheists are left … As far as those who have graduated to Atheism+ are concerned, Dawkins was cast into Outer Darkness during Elevatorgate and his subsequent remarks about Islam have only confirmed the justness of that punishment. He’s probably only slightly less despised than Sam Harris.

A+ers follow the party line on Islam: a public Nativity scene is a harbinger of monstrous dominionist theocracy and must be torn down; banning the burka in public is racism at its rankest, with a dash of misogyny.

If pressed they’ll concede that criticising Islam isn’t necessarily racist (because Islam isn’t a race etc); but in practice it invariably is racist if the one doing the criticising has white skin. Most likely whitey is using opposition to Islam as a convenient cover for racist hostility to people with brown skin. (Why anti-Hinduism or anti-Sikhism don’t make similarly convenient covers isn’t addressed.) And in the unlikely event that he isn’t prejudiced against brown folks, he’s still being racist in some kind of structural sense because Mohams are ‘further down the gradient of power’ than white Christians or atheists.

The comments to the linked “Itself” post contain a truly delicious reference: The episode “Mirror, Mirror” of the original Star Trek series. For those not old enough or geek enough, this is where the oft-seen term “Evil Spock” comes from (AKA Goateed Spock).

Whether consciously or not, the DE is the “Mirror, Mirror ” to the Progressive Universal Enlightenment. We’re traveling aboard the ISS Enterprise, and here’s the conclusion of the La Wik plot summary:

At home in the Federation universe, Spock reports he found the ruthless attitude of the Mirror landing party refreshing, calling their evil counterparts “the very flower of humanity”.

    Fascinating.

So I read the wiki summary – what kind of morons would refuse mining rights to the mirror universe Federation if they’ll just off you and take what they need from your planet after you’re dead?

Isn’t that the point? The ruthlessness makes a negotiated settlement much much easier, no?

‘If Islam is a terrible thing, and if people continue to embrace it despite knowing about a superior alternative, there must be something wrong with those people’s reasoning capacity that doesn’t allow it to reach the high level of white people’s.’

Ha ha! The level of ‘thought’ on this site just gets more and more sophisticated …

I attempted to post at Kotsko’s but was not accepted. My point: Islam does not permit exit. Apostasy is a capital offence in many Islamic countries, and people really do get murdered for seeking to leave the faith. Even in the UK, there are incredible social and family sanctions against leaving Islam if you’re born into it.

Kotsko presents an absurd picture: as if Richard Dawkins is completely free to go to Riyadh or Mecca and lecture the locals on atheism; but when he goes there, the locals are so convinced of the rightness of Islam he just can’t get through to them. This bears no relation to reality.

I don’t know if any Muslim-majority countries permit atheists like Dawkins to lecture on their territory, or if any Muslim-majority countries would be safe for atheists to give lecture in. But if there are any, I’d guess it’s a tiny proportion.
