I attempted to post at Kotsko’s but was not accepted. My point: Islam does not permit exit. Apostasy is a capital offence in many Islamic countries, and people really do get murdered for seeking to leave the faith. Even in the UK, there are incredible social and family sanctions against leaving Islam if you’re born into it.

Kotsko presents an absurd picture: as if Richard Dawkins is completely free to go to Riyadh or Mecca and lecture the locals on atheism; but when he goes there, the locals are so convinced of the rightness of Islam he just can’t get through to them. This bears no relation to reality.

I don’t know if any Muslim-majority countries permit atheists like Dawkins to lecture on their territory, or if any Muslim-majority countries would be safe for atheists to give lecture in. But if there are any, I’d guess it’s a tiny proportion.
