*Songs* is his best. That said, I’ll think you’ll find his tales of corporate horror, which appear in *Teatro Grottesco* and *My Work Is Not Yet Done,* to be particularly gratifying.

Excerpt from “The Nightmare Network,” published in the latter collection: “Memo from the CEO: As the forces operating in today’s marketplace become more shadowy and incomprehensible we must recommit ourselves every second of every day to a ceaseless striving for that elusive dream which we all share and which none of us can remember, if it ever existed in the first place. And if anyone thinks that, as all the world races toward the same elusive dream, our competition isn’t fully prepared to gnaw off its own genitals to get to the promised land before us and keep it for themselves . . . think again.”

I think I’d prefer to deal with the Cenobites from *Hellraiser* rather than the senior management team at The Nightmare Network/OneiriCon. Better the Lament Configuration than . . . the cubicle.

He does apparently do work on the mathematics of Friendliness, although it doesn’t seem like he’s very productive. I suppose a cynic would say “Friendliness” was a great way to deflect questions on when the seed AI will be finished. He now has people convinced that AI research should be delayed; it seems almost too perfect. But perhaps we can take him at his word (in the Sequences) and he genuinely thought he needed to find young mathematical prodigies to solve Friendliness.

Personally I never made it past the first chapter of HPMoR. Maybe it gets better.

I’ve known Yudkowsky through various channels for about fourteen years now, so I know the history behind SIAI; he had some pretty promising work there at the beginning. The real question is:

Does he honestly believe in what he is doing- that his “rationality propaganda” is more important than coding seed AI…

…or did he realize his AI paradigms were a dead end and figure this was a way to keep the gravy train rolling?

In his defense, I find his fanfic pretty good, at least as a non-fanfic reader, though HPMoR lost me about twenty chapters in. I just don’t have that kind of attention span.

The Singularity Institute was founded 14 years ago and it took Yudkowsky many years to get it going. He had one major donor who bankrolled things early on. Back then, Yudkowsky was a fun kind of guy and the goal was to create a seed AI and to hell with the consequences, so it was a sexier prospect and he used to tell people that if they didn’t donate they were codemning billions to death since a late singularity would mean late immortality. Still, he had to beg for money frequently since he didn’t have a broad enough donor base. But I guess the key is that once you get these things going, you can change mission half-way through from saving the world from death to writing bad fanfic and still get paid.
