When one is made to choose between pioneering exploration and certain death, including the death of one’s species and descendants, the choice is trivially clear. Virtually all of humanity’s noteworthy explorers and pioneers sought strange and distant skies for far more complex (and even heroic) reasons.

One might think the acid test for monkey-transcendence is whether one would be willing to choose the strange and distant if an affirmative answer would mean the certain death of one's species and descendants.

The movie’s depiction of Earth was thoroughly ‘monkey’ — to such an extent that it even seemed to devalue the motivations of those space-pioneers. When one is made to choose between pioneering exploration and certain death, including the death of one’s species and descendants, the choice is trivially clear. Yes, I knew the “superhumanism” wouldn’t sit well around here. I do wish Nolan would have made technology and increasing technological feedback loops more central to the story. This could have been done by incorporating the robots somehow (perhaps intimately) into the “Adam and Eve” shots of the last few minutes.
