"what do we have to show for this vast human and material waste?"
-- the rough triangles answer: an impending Islamic civil war of stupendous scale.
It's hard to believe this was the intended outcome, or that it was realized in the most efficient fashion. Perhaps it's just my morbid imagination, but 'The Palin Doctrine' seems to hint at a recognition of rough triangle thinking (which would make it the most intelligent mainstream commentary on the topic (IMHO)).

I think that the article is summarized with the following question, "Indeed, with $2 trillion sunk, 7,000 U.S. troops dead, 40,000 wounded, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans dead, and millions of refugees, what do we have to show for this vast human and material waste?"

A realpolitik analysis of the USG's interventions in the Middle East would likely conclude that the USG has denied Middle East Oil to states that it does don not like. Why is such control good for the USG? In order to have a large scale conventional war, you need lots of oil. Tanks don't work on solar power after all. Accordingly, the USG has prevented a large scale war from breaking out by controlling the flow of oil from the Middle East to other parts of the world. Instead of one really big war, the USG has committed itself to an almost unending series of small scale conflicts. These wars have maintained the Pax Americana in the Middle East. This way of waging war, however, will soon be obsolete due to new oil extractions. As more and more countries produce more and more oil, the oil market will make it harder and harder for any one government to control the flow of energy in the world.

Right now I am of the opinion that the end of the petrodollar is a signal that the USG will have to dominate in new areas to continue its hegemony. Cyber warfare is now the place to be. The USG certainly is trying to be king of that hill, but I really wonder if any government will be able to do more than simply protect itself. Wired has an interesting article on that development: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/06/general-keith-alexander-cyberwar/ Cyber warfare is not my speciality, but I would certainly love to learn more.

Sperglord of the Homosphere, you forgot to mention that Ogabe is actually a really really brilliant elite honours graduate (and not an affirmative-action promotee, which is just a conspiracy theory of fat white proles).

Further evidence of Ogabean brilliance can be had by asking one Jeffrey Osborne.
