The main reason for my bitterly twisted response to Her was the most extreme disappointment I have ever experienced with a movie. The conceit was superb -- human erotic entanglement with an intelligent machine. Instead, the OS was from the start just a disincorporated Scarlett Johansson (i.e. absurdly and unproblematically cute from the beginning), there was absolutely no tension of any kind, and a continuous tsunami of cheap schmaltz was substituted for the promised encounter with an alien being. I wanted a movie about involvement with AI, and received a Hallmark card. Not even an edgy Hallmark card.

I quite enjoyed Her, but I have a feeling that our host was rubbed the wrong way by watching his beloved city pretend to be a wretched future LA.

(To be honest, I enjoyed watching another city pretend to be LA for once- how many times have we had to suffer through Toronto and Sydney pretending to be New York? Watching Shanghai as Los Angeles was fun, though it did cause me to have to hang my disbelief at a few points- one painful shot of Pudong's big three skyscrapers and one straight over the Bund was a little much for me. At least they kept the Oriental Pearl Tower out of the scenes.)

Haven't seen the doc, but I've heard a lot of stories. There was a doc on Moebius that sort of discussed Dune a little.

Not only did Jodo pick the coolest artists to work on the staff like Giger and Giraud, but he also had Magma for the soundtrack -- the fact that he was even aware of them is an achievement in itself. I can get why dissident-rightists would peg him as a degenerate, but he has a great eye for aesthetics.
