The dynamics of this confrontation are exemplary of Cathedral aggression. O’Connor, an emissary of the Cathedral, writes an open letter to leach some publicity from Cyrus. Cyrus, not being a complete idiot, senses the aggressive move that the format of an ‘open letter’ constitutes. Unwilling to be patronised she sends a two figure salute back to Sinead, alluding to her flirtation with mental illness. Sinead faines being the victim and calls in the lawyers, but is of course in reality backed by the moral superiority – and power – of the Cathedral.

Of course when Sinead O’Connor tore up a picture of the Pope on live television it wasn’t offensive, because, as everyone knows, Catholics are all paedophiles anyway, so it’s OK to offend them.
