It would be easier to compare Israel to a modern-day fortress than to compare it to loose sand. On a per-capita basis, Israel’s military is by a wide margin the strongest in the world; it punches well above its weight. According to GlobalFirepower’s rankings — which are generally quite good — it’s the 11th strongest military in the world. Every country with a higher ranking has a population at least 5x larger; on average, the higher ranked countries have populations >15x larger.

Having said that, they’re playing their enemy’s game, the deck is heavily stacked against them, and barring the rise of unexpected strategic asymmetries, their strategic position is going to deteriorate over time.
