Quote note (#122)
Succinct perfection from Fernandez:
The only socialist form of self-correction is apparently collapse.
ADDED: Glenn Reynolds being silly — “[Mancur] Olson wrote that — as with the German and Japanese booms after World War II — it takes a major calamity, such as a war or a revolution, to cut through that web and allow economic growth to take off again. I’ve argued in the past that massive democratic change — a ‘wave’ election — might accomplish the same end.”
ADDED: Collapse candidate No.1
If that were true socialists would collapse immediately. Rather, their actual goal is merely power at any cost. If they fail at this they adapt quickly and deftly. Historically, at any rate, sclerosis is probably setting hard by now.

Think of it like a virus, as it copies itself from host to host (liberal progressives) it mutates. Every so often a mutation creates a viable strategy for defeating any agent (conservative ideas) impeding its progress. However, because the virus is critically dependent on the host for life (government) and has no self-correction, it destroys the host and ultimately itself too.

Ehm.. no one has told Fernandez that the low old prices are Saudis repeating the strategy that in combination with Star Wars managed to bankrupt the USSR.

Fixed
(In my own thinking I also began with realizing restricting suffrage from more and groups would be good until I realized the whole concept should be put in the trash.)

Indeed you are right. Obviously I’m still peeling back the onion skin layers of my own liberal education. Thank you for that correction.

I am not sympathetic to socialism, but what about Belarus? Aren’t they proof that socialism can keep going on indefinitely if there is enough political support?

Expectations were that after the old man died they’d surrender to the USA in days. But hey, there he is. And if the Saudi’s weren’t flooding the oil market we might even have decades of Venezuelan socialism.

Totally. The main point in emphasizing ‘collapse’ is that it really is the end of a road — and it can be a hell of a long road.

Everything takes longer than it should, even collapse.
