Pinker made it sound like we’ve evolved our nastiness away, but there’s no good evidence to claim that we may not bounce back into nasty bastards again. The Cheka was plenty nasty and it wasn’t that long ago.

Given present day armaments and our population levels, a nasty psychopath with an army in case of total breakdown of world order may very well make Zhang Xianzhong look like Gandhi.

The word “violent” is surely metaphorical, right?

It strikes me as odd that violence would be the basis for cosmic fear (or whatever) in the 21st century when violence is steadily declining and has been for centuries before.

Other than that, it’s a nice quote. Fun to think about.
