Sclerotic organizations in business and government are ruined by the lack of proper motivation and incentive structures with ‘severe consequence’. Spare the rod, spoil the child, writ as large as all humanity in all its endeavors.

Maybe something Nietzsche-related as well and progress in capabilities through intense competition motivated by the awful prospect of losing. The more awful, the greater the incentive for striving. ‘The worse the better’?
