His four years on a boat at sea were like one gigantic meditation. When I first read The Encantadas I was mesmerized. It is a beautiful depiction … no, wait … that’s not right … it was an evocation of the sleepiness of a calm sea and calm islands. Dude was a master. I don’t even know if I could get through five pages of Melville now without checking my blackberry. Very sad. Something needs to be done!
