    I read Catch-22 for the first time a couple of years ago. The passage you paraphrase here is one of the first lines of fictional writing that had effected me deeply in years. All the more because it was unexpected; everything I’d heard about the book made it sound as if it were some sort of farce, not a surreal dystopian military fiction.
